Citizenship and voting

Voting is at the heart of active citizenship, and our choice of voting system can have a dramatic effect on the kind of democracy we live in. We works to provide information and teaching resources on voting and electoral systems for citizenship teachers.

Teaching elections

Voting in the UK is our latest publications aimed at breaking down the jargon around elections for a school age audience.

At present we're developing a comprehensive teaching pack on voting systems used all over the UK suitable for Key Stage 3. For more information, contact Youth and Student Campaigns Officer Jonathan Pyke

School Talks

We provides speakers to schools, colleges, Politics Societies, Women's Institutes and other civic groups.  We have a network of speakers across Britain.

The talks are flexible and can vary in content and length to suit the needs of the audience.  Topics usually covered include the current voting system, alternative voting systems (as used for various elections in the UK and abroad) and the possibilities for change.

There is no charge for the talks, though the Society does ask host organisations to cover the speaker's travel expenses.

If you are interested in having a talk from the Electoral Reform Society, please contact Havard Hughes by e-mail or tel: 020 7928 1622; fax: 020 7401 7789.

Graduate Research

The Society is proud to host the Lakeman Libary for Electoral Studies, home to a growing collection of academic works and original archival material on representative democracy.  It is open to all researchers by prior appointment.
