Lakeman Library

The Society is proud to host the Lakeman Library for Electoral Studies,  an important and growing source of information on all aspects of the voting process and representative democracy.

Re-opened by Dr David Butler in November 1996, the Library was renamed in commemoration of Enid Lakeman, the distinguished former director of the Electoral Reform Society. It  houses the archives of the Proportional Representation Society, which was founded in 1884, and became the Electoral Reform Society in 1959.

The Lakeman collection includes
  • Over 2,000 books, 2,000 pamphlets, over 50 journals,
  • Extensive press cuttings and other printed material from the mid nineteenth century onwards on voting systems and elections, electoral reform and proportional representation, suffrage and other related constitutional issues.
With balloting and elections being seen as a vital aspect of representative democracy, the Lakeman Library forms the core of an important and growing source of information on all aspects of the voting process and representative democracy.

The Library is located on the first floor of the Electoral Reform Society's offices and is open to researchers between the hours of 9.30a.m. and 5.30p.m, during weekdays by prior appointment with the Trust's Executive Secretary.

The Library is always delighted to receive any books, journals, pamphlets or papers on any relevant subjects and actively seeks charitable donations and legacies in support of its upkeep and development.

About the McDougal Trust

The McDougall Trust is an independently managed educational research charity, established in 1948 under the will of Sir Robert McDougall, a member of the flour-milling family.  Sir Robert, who took a close interest in the study of elections and electoral systems, had been a long-standing member of the Electoral Reform Society, a Vice-President, and one of its most generous benefactors. The connection is reflected in the fact that the trustees of the Trust are appointed by the Society's Council.

The Trust's objectives are to advance knowledge of, and encourage research:
  • in political or economic science, functions of government and the services provided to the community by public and voluntary organisations; and
  • into methods of election of, and the selection and government of, representative organisations, whether national, civic, commercial, industrial or social; and
  • into representative democracy, its forms, functions and development, and associated institutions
The Trust actively seeks charitable donations in support of its work which includes the maintenance and development of the Lakeman Library for Electoral Studies, a unique research resource. The Trust publishes Representation: Journal of Representative Democracy.
