Myth-Busting

We believe that modern government requires a voting system that delivers popular government, accountability and fair votes. And that means proportional representation (PR).

But Reformers have to contend with enduring myths on PR in both politics and the media. Stock phrases such as “smoke-filled rooms”, “horse-trading”, “weak government” and “minority interests” are de rigueur for the Old Guard. Examples of PR in practice are likely to be restricted to Italy or Weimar Germany.

These are well clichés that can’t go answered. Some are the work of traditionalists, who rely on attacks given the impossibility of building a positive case for the current system. Others are based on misunderstandings, confusions and simple bad reporting.

Key myths to watch for include:

  • PR lets small parties rule the roost
  • PR is incomprehensible
  • PR doesn’t let you kick out an unpopular government
  • PR breaks the constituency link.
  • PR does nothing for turnout
  • PR creates weak coalitions
  • PR lets in extremist parties

Our mission is to separate the facts from the fiction. And the evidence for our case is compelling. Our Quick Guide PR Myths is an indispensable tool for all Reformers who want to set the record straight.

All too often our opponents throw up the Straw Man of Party Lists. This crude form of proportional representation used in our European Elections is beset with problems, but is used to tarnish all alternative voting systems.

Remember. Not all systems of PR are equal. We believe the Single Transferable Vote is the best system on offer for delivering real choice and real accountability.
