New Peers anathema to spirit of New Politics

Published: Monday, May 17th 2010

The Electoral Reform Society has commented on news that the government is preparing to appoint 100 new life peers to the Lords.

The coalition currently has 258 Peers to Labour’s 211. Moves are apparently being contemplated to bring the Lords in line with the popular vote.

The Electoral Reform Society’s Chief Executive Dr Ken Ritchie said:

“We’re pleased the new government is apparently so concerned about reflecting the popular vote in the Lords. We only wish they applied the same logic to the House of Commons.

“The government has delivered on fixed terms for the Commons. This week it is quite essential that we know when these newly appointed peers get their marching orders. These appointments are wholly anathema to the spirit of the New Politics.”
