Politicians from across the political spectrum will gather today, as the Electoral Reform Society prepares to rename its headquarters in honour of the Founding Father of the single transferable vote, Thomas Hare.
2006 marked the 200th anniversary of birth of Hare, the reformer whose ideas contributed to the development of the Single Transferable Vote and the cause of electoral reform.
To mark the occasion, Bishop Richard Hare will be presenting the Society with a small portrait of his great grandfather. At the reception this will be unveiled by Hare’s great, great, great grandson - another Thomas Hare.
The STV system will be used for this year’s Scottish local elections – its first use in public elections in Great Britain for more than half a century. To ensure the success of its introduction, the Society has also opened offices in Edinburgh.
The reception will also see the live launch of the Society’s new website – not just a new look for a new year, but a better tool for improving understanding of democracy.
